When to Replace an Air Conditioner

An air conditioner reaches the end of its life span after around ten years of use.

No air conditioner lasts forever; even a high-quality unit eventually has to be replaced. However, replacing an air conditioning unit is a significant investment, so homeowners should be confident it’s necessary. Keep in mind the following signs that an air conditioner is at the end of its life when considering installing a new unit.

An old unit

An air conditioner reaches the end of its life span after around ten years of use. Sometimes, a well-maintained unit can last upwards of fifteen years; however, it may need more repairs after the ten-year mark. Not to mention that at this point, newer models far exceed the older unit in efficiency and effectiveness, which means that replacing it as soon as possible could save money in the long run by lowering the energy bill.

Constant repairs

Most air conditioning units require occasional repairs, but if repairs are becoming constant, it’s a sign that the air conditioner may be on its last legs. Even if those repair costs don’t seem to amount to much on their own, they add up, making it more financial sense to replace the unit.

Expensive repairs

If something goes wrong with the air conditioner and the repair estimate is extremely expensive, investing that money in a new air conditioner may make sense. For example, if repairing the unit is half what a new unit costs, there’s almost no point in paying for the repair.

An inefficient unit

If the air conditioner has a low seasonal energy efficiency rating (SEER), replacing it with a new unit could substantially reduce energy costs. The SEER of a new unit should start at 13 but can reach around 20 or 24. If an older unit has a rating under 10, it’s likely time to replace it. If the energy bill rises, it’s time to do a SEER test and likely replace the air conditioning unit.

An ineffective unit

The unit is no longer working if the home isn’t cooling evenly and sufficiently, even after multiple repairs and maintenance services. Comfort in the home should be the utmost priority, especially in warmer climates. Be sure to contact an expert to replace the unit as soon as possible to benefit everyone in the home.

These are the most common signs that it’s time to replace an air conditioning unit. Be sure to monitor the air conditioner to catch these signs early. If it’s time to schedule an inspection or replace the unit, contact a professional HVAC company, as these experts have the experience and knowledge to deliver efficient and quality work.
